MAC's Latest Multi-Culti Color Collection

Totally feeling the array of "nude" shades MAC just came out with in their All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collection. A few shades are re-runs of older shades, but the majority are limited edition and the loose pigment powders have gotten a packaging makeover that's going to stick. I'm dying to get my hands on the goldish "Universal Mix" pigment ($19.50) and the eyeshadow in "All Races" ($14.50)

Vampy Lips Go Violet

As with so many things, the key to purple lipstick glory is proper context. Pair it with heavy eyeliner and fishnets and you may as well park yourself in the food court with an ironic lunchbox full of rejected Smiths lyrics. Pair it with a bare face, a tailored ensemble and a dash of Tammy Faye mascara and you're fashion.

Since it's a trend (yes the vampy lip gets a re-up every year, but far more frequently in red), I'd recommend a cheap tube for your test run. For a matte version, check out MAC "Night Violet" ($14.50), for a laquered look try the latest shade from Revlon "Va Va Violet" ($5), pictured right.

The Look:
- Apply liquid foundation to even out skin tone and skip the blush
- Dab highlighter on eyelids concentrating at the inner corners and blend outward
- Carefully line lower water line (above lashes) with white eye pencil
- Add several coats of mascara to top and bottom lashes, sweeping alternately inward (towards the nose) and outward to create irregular "points" or clumps
- Fill brows with a neutral pencil (as I have mentioned, I live for MAC Lingering)
- Line lips with a dark berry lip pencil (like Revlon Colorstay in Plum) and fill in with lipstick

Warning: Violet doesn't do your teeth any favors - catch up on your Whitestrip applications before you go making this your shade of choice. Also- be prepared for dudes and townies not to "get it." This look might be a bit much for their untrained eyes to handle.

MAC Style Black: Fierce, Not Food Court

I was in Nordstrom today and fell fairly obsessed with MAC Cosmetics "Style Black" collection. I was skeptical of a Kat von Disaster when I first heard about it, but it's truly a line of versatile and wearable items (save the black lipstick, which I can't imagine will be a big seller.)

The mineralize eye shadows are particularly stunning - Cinderfella and Blue Flame are on my wishlist. They go on smooth and rich, and the glitter is ultra-fine. There are several products in the line that aren't new, but just mesh well with the collection so they are included (Mattene lipstick in Night Violet is a re-issue) - below is a list of the items that are really debuting.

Cremesheen Lipstick ($14)
Black Knight - Creamy true black
Mattene Lipstick ($14.50)
Midnight Media - Dense matte black

Glimmerglass Lipgloss ($18)
Bling Black - Sheer black with gold pearl
Blackfire - Sheer black with pink purple pearl
Blackware - Creamy true black

Mineralize Eye Shadows ($19)
Cinderfella - Black with silver pearl
Young Punk - Black with pink purple pearl
Gilt by Association - Black with gold bronze pearl
Blue Flame - Black with blue pearl

Grease Paintstick ($17.50)
Black - Intense black

Nail Lacquer ($12)
Seriously Hip - Black with gold particle pearl
Baby Goth Girl - Black with pink and purple pearl

Smashbox's Tudor-Inspired Fall Color Collection

Smashbox put out a fairly classic palette for Fall 2009 with foliage-esque gold, russet and pine shadows paired with complementing liners and a neutral lip and cheek. I'm loving the colors (and I'm a huge fan of their products in general - total quality) but I'm confused. The collection is said to be inspired by the English Tudors. According to what I've read, the rage quite consistently from the Crusades up through the Elizabethan era was rosy red on cheeks and lips. I can only assume they're referencing fabrics.

Nonetheless, I'm dying to get my hands on the deep green shadow! At $42 the set is a little steep. To the wishlist it goes...

Burton Bleaches Another Brunette

The Huffington Post put up a bunch of shots of the actors in character for Tim Burton's upcoming "Alice in Wonderland." Burton has a habit of turning dark haired girls platinum blonde for his movies (Christina Ricci in "Sleepy Hollow" and Winona Ryder in "Edward Scisorrhands" and now Anne Hathaway for her role as the White Queen.)

Agyness Deyn already did the dark brows and bleach look, so I highly doubt that will be a trend (god, I hate it. HATE IT.) The drama of icy porcelain skin (sans blush) and blood red lips, however, is killer.

Smashbox Sale: 20 Percent Off

In case you don't have your bifocals on, the code is FFSB9 for 20% off. I recommend their glosses - very similar to NARS gloss in their non-sticky texture and color range.

Kiss of Fire

My latest cosmetics obsession (after spotting the look on a Zac Posen model for his Fall 2009 collection show -check the pics below) is orange lipstick. No, I haven't lost my mind. I'm just bored of true red, and nothing lights up the eyes and the complexion like a gash of color on the mouth.

M.A.C. Cosmetics cult classic shade "Morange" is what Posen's ladies were rocking, but I'm pretty broke and $14 on a lipstick feels steep, so I hit the drugstore today looking for something similar. The winners:

Revlon Super Lustrous in Kiss Me Coral (the web image looks dull but it's near neon in real life) $7.99

L'Oreal Colour Riche in Volcanic $8.95

NARS Reveals Summer 2009 Products

NARS is one of the few brands that is not a bff of Hearts Like Stars yet (We've reached out a few times... maybe they're just not down with bloggers?) so I can't give you the skinny on the texture and lasting power of the colors they released today. What I can say is that the look is bold, but at the same time, sophisticated. I'm a big fan of the upcoming orange lipstick trend.

The model is wearing new single eyeshadow in Tropic ($22), lip liner in Tonga ($20) and lipstick in Outsider ($24). The entire summer 2009 collection is pictured at left. Notice there is no blush? Don't do it if you're wearing eyes and lips this bold! A dusting of bronzer is all the color you need.

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends

Click any image to enlarge in a new window

Color! So glad it's sticking around beyond the spring and summer seasons for 2009. Dior's models rocked the rainbow at the Fall 2009 show, and the old 80's up-to-the-eyebrows trend seems to be back with a vengeance. So long as you choose a flattering color for yourself, I say go nuts.

A slash of black liquid liner along the top lids is a classic look, but I like how they also lined the crease to create a longer eye at Moschino. At Vivienne Westwood they punked out the usually ladylike look by applying liner to the entire lid. Try Urban Decay's Liquid Liner in Perversion ($18 - P.S. I find the liners with brushes as opposed to "felt tips" create a cleaner line.)

Usually a summer makeup trend, bright coral showed up on lips and cheeks in two fall shows. Combined with a complementary bright pink lip or a doll-like smoky eye, when done lightly this color is completely wearable on most skin tones. Zac's model is wearing M.A.C. Cosmetics - Eyeshadow in Blackberry ($14.50)and Lipstick in Morange ($14.50). Betsey's model is wearing Stila - Long wear lip color in Hippie ($17)and Convertible Color in Gladiola ($25)on cheeks.

This is a strong look and a tough one to pull off, but with the right evening ensemble (I'd go with something simple, with a feminine accent like a ruffle or bow just for contrast) the goth lipped look can be done. Betsey's model is wearing Stila Cosmetics - Onyx Kajal eyeliner ($18) and Convertible Color in Poppy ($25), both on the lips.

I'm not a big bronzer gal myself, but toned down the full lid of shimmery brown shadow and a peachy nude blush can look really soft. Back in the day this went hand in hand with a heavily shaded brow - I like how they left them natural at the Chloe show (pictured.) Try Smashbox eyeshadow in Sienna ($16), layered with Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy shadow ($14).

And the best for last - conceptual God John Galliano sent the ghosts of gypsies past down the runway for fall, and thanks to some equally masterful makeup artistry, models looked like abandoned childhood dolls left to freeze in a blizzard.

Eyeshadow was applied to the entire socket of each eye, with the inner corners and browbones highlighted with a dash of metallic cream to prevent a completely punched-out look. Cheekbones were carved out with plum powder and brought forward with cool metallic highlighter.

I'm really fascinated by the way it was done, so be on the lookout for a how-to in the future.
A great highlighter I recently tested? Smashbox 2-in-1 Luminizing Primer. ($34 for .98 oz.)

O-Plump Doesn't Burn

Every lip plumper I've ever tried has burned my lips with a gross cinnamon tingle, made them unbearably sticky, and then caused them to peel. Maybe they plumped my lips... but maybe they just felt fat because they were on fire?

Anyway, I've liked Smashbox's O-Gloss and O-Glow products (which supposedly adjusts to the "perfect" pink to complement your skintone - I always get a Barbie hot pink) so I gave O-Plump ($24) a shot.

Verdict: Tingly but cooling, not burning. Tastes minty. Color comes out the same as O-Gloss. Lips were still a little peely after a couple hours, but the gloss isn't sticky and does seem to give a slight pinch to your pout.

PS: They have an O-Bronze product out, but I'm leery about picking it up based on the brightness of the pink that I get from the other "O" products. Seems like carrot orange is inevitable? Comment if you've tried it.

Lancome Rocks with "Pink Irreverence"

I never thought a gloss with this much glitter could win my heart, let alone in a traffic-halting hot pink. In the last few years, I've laid all the makeup weight on my eyes and left my lips lightly glossed (following that cardinal rule most sane women abide by - that you can do major eyes or do major lips, but to do both leaves you looking like a drunk hooker.) However, it's hard to not be mesmerized by Lancome's new La Laque Fever ($26.) It's a mega-shine, mega-sparkle, mega-hued gloss in an angular case, with a flat edged, pointed tip applicator that allows for a defined cupid's bow. They seem to have thought of everything!

The good: It stays on for hours. Even when the sheen of the gloss dulls, the color remains true, and the glitter isn't lost with the goo. It's really about as glam as it gets - Hedwig herself would be stocking up.
The bad: This ain't no slap-and-go gloss - you'd better carry a mirror if you plan to reapply. With a product this intense, anything but precision will leave you with a psychedelic 'stache or a neo-kinderwhore smear.

The Electric Pink pictured above is just one of several luxuriously punked-out products in the "Pink Irreverence" Spring 09 Color Collection by makeup artist Aaron De Mey, Lancome's International Creative Director.

Just a head's up: The color fever gloss in this collection called Piha Black (above, layered over red lipstick) sold out like crazy on it's first release, so if you want to try it, jump on it now. It's a sheer, glittery black created as a topcoat to dramatize an existing lipstick shade - or it can be worn alone for a more avant garde look.

P.S. - Want this tee? Send your email address to HeartsLikeStars@gmail.com with a photo of you and your favorite Lancome product. One winner (chosen by staff) will get this super cute American Apparel shirt and their photo featured on Hearts Like Stars. (T-shirt available in size small only.)

Clinique Launches Spring 2009 Collection "First Blush"

I had the opportunity to try out the spring 2009 collection from Clinique this past week, "First Blush". Highlights include flower-themed eyeshadow duos in ethereal neutrals, high-shine glosses with just a whisper of color, and the standout innovation I adore - Quick Blush.

I have to admit, I'm a child and I played with the products before reading the details, so I had no idea how to use Quick Blush and ended up sticking my finger in the cap (where the blush is.) Here's how it actually works:

With a twist the brush picks up just enough blush from the cap to add a nice flush to your cheeks. Equally impressive is the quality of the super-soft retractable brush, which alone is worth the price of the product. I'll probably clean it and continue to use it even after the blush runs out. Reduce, reuse, recycle, ladies!

The eyeshadow packaging is super cute, and Clinique just has a knack for creating universally flattering shades. Of course I could show you pics of the gorgeous model with artist-applied eyeshadow they sent me, but I wanted y'all to see how they look on a real chick who applied them in about 30 seconds:

[Fresh Bloom Eye Shadow ($16.50 each, from left): Tiger Lily, Apple Blossom, Maple Blossom, Cherry Blossom; Lash Doubling Mascara ($14, all photos); Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in First Blush (1,2) and Honey Shimmer (3,4), $14 each; Quick Blush in Hurry Honey (1,3) and In-a-Rush Blush (2,4) $21.50.]

"First Blush" will be available at Clinique locations nationwide in February 2009, and online at Clinique.com.

P.S. My faves? The Quick Blush in Hurry Honey and the shadow in Tiger Lily.

Stila Honors Barbie's 50th with a Special Collection

Although she doesn't look it (chalk it up to botox - it's not like those boobs are real) Barbie turns 50 years old this year. To celebrate this occasion, America's favorite source of female body dysmorphia will be launching another cosmetics collaboration, on the heels of 2007's $9 million success with MAC Cosmetics.

This year, Barbie Loves Stila. Instead of separately-sold shades like they did with MAC, Mattel and Stila created four separate boxed sets ("beauty cans" ...ew) representing different stages of Barbie's evolution:

Ponytail Doll
(a liquid eyeliner and a three-pan compact with two eye shadows and blush)
Malibu Barbie (a pale pink Lip Glaze called Malibu, a black mascara and a compact with two eye shadows and a bronzer)
Foxy Doll
(mascara and a compact with two eye shadows and a blush)
Jewel Doll
(bright pink Lip Glaze called Jewel, a Multi-Effect Mascara and a compact with two eye shadows and a blush)

Each will sell for $40 exclusively at Sephora. Considering a Stila eyeshadow is $18 and a lip glaze is $22, this will be a good deal providing that all the colors are nice.

Side Note: Am I crazy or does afro Barbie just look like a white Barbie with a really fake-looking tan? Unless it's supposed to be black Barbie post-LaToya Jackson rhinoplasty?

Does winter wreak havoc on your lips?

The only things I like about winter are cute coats and scarves. The list of things I hate about winter could go on forever. One of the things that tops that list is chapped lips. If your favorite lip balm isn't helping your poor lips feel any better this winter then you might want to try out Benefit's Lipscription.

Lipscription comes with a set of two tubes of awesome. The first tube is an exfoliating bead scrub. It's got AHA and jojoba to get rid of dry lips and lines. Put just a little dab on your finger and scrub your lips with it for about a minute. Rinse off the scrub and then smooth the silky lip balm over your lips. The vitamin E and chamomile in the lip balm will have your lips feeling smooth and sexy.

The set may seem a little pricey at $32, but your lips will thank you!

Origins Lipstick Has Flower Power

I'm usually not a lipstick girl- or not a vivid lipstick girl, anyway. But I kept seeing these hot magenta shades showing up on models all over the place this year, and it inspired me.
After a few misses, I found a shade I really love - Origins Flower Fusion Lipstick in Peony. Dab it on with a finger over lip balm to get a subdued shade like above.
Why it's great: It's super-moisturizing. Unlike others that claim the same, it's not goopy or sticky. Straight from the tube its gorgeous and rich, and as I said, dabbed on it's wonderfully subtle. No gross lipstick taste. (Plus I'm a sucker for pretty packaging- the pink metallic tube won me over.)
Cost: $16. A splurge, but rich jewel tones are going to be "in" beyond the new year, so it's a worthy one.

Hot Gloss

Bamboo Pink, Bonfire, Fireberry

Au naturale femme, sun-kissed beach babe and ruby-lipped glamazon. Three shades of Clinique's new Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 and you've got all of these looks in the (makeup) bag.
The idea: Sheer, long lasting shades with SPF 15 to protect your lips (Crucial! They are skin too, you know.)
The verdict: An array of natural, mica-flecked shades easily complement any skintone. Shimmer is fine, not gaudy and the colors are more reminiscent of plants than of Hi-C flavors. Though translucent, the pigment does hold for several hours. The high shine factor also makes lips look fuller.
Drawbacks: Mildly sticky. Don't go around kissing people or walking with your hair down on a windy day in this stuff.
Faves: I love Bamboo Pink for a natural everyday look and with a mod smoky eye at night. Bonfire illuminates a face dusted with bronzer and peach blush, and for a chic classic look the raspberry Fireberry shade (so hot for spring) is perfection.
Price: $14. Shop here.

The Perfect Purchase

'Tis the season! Here are a few products that share the wealth with a good cause...

Kiss My Face Lip Action lip balm
$1 to The Alliance for Climate Protection
The word: This stuff is FAB. Smooth and light, and lacking the overwhelming, chemical taste of most fruit-flavored glosses. Berry, Mango and Mint were refreshing and probably the best of the flavors. (Eco-Coco is a cute name, but the combination of cocoa and mandarin was a little nauseating.) These balms are completely clear and are relatively matte, so they're a perfect stocking stuffer for that guy whose medicine-reeking ChapStick habit disgusts you. Available exclusively at Whole Foods.

Philosophy has several products where 100% of the gross profit is donated. There are shower gels benefiting the Women's Cancer Research Fund, the Rainforest Foundation and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, candles for the Joyful Heart Foundation and PBS, and a room spray for the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (I am trying very hard not to make a joke...)

M.A.C. Viva Glam lipsticks and glosses contribute 100% to the M.A.C. AIDS Fund

*Note: I found a website called Think Before You Pink that discusses some cosmetics companies who are active in fundraising for women's cancers, but some of whose products contain cancer-causing ingredients. Something to think about.
That said (ahem), I'll mention that 10% of the retail price of any L'Oreal Color of Hope lipcolor will benefit the Ovarian Cancer Reasearch Fund.

Green Lipstick

You probably saw "An Inconvenient Truth," and it made you feel guilty about your own contribution to the destruction of our planet. So you switched your light bulbs to those big wonky ones and you started recycling, but you wish you could do more. Well, at least you don't have to feel bad tossing the empty tube into the trash when you dig the last finger-full of color out of Cargo's PlantLove lipstick. The packaging is totally biodegradable. Because it's made of CORN. Weird right? But positive science magic and no, you won't look like Pocahontas pulling this thing out of your bag, because somehow it looks like any other lipstick and not some vegetable-lipstick hybrid.

They make 12 shades, 5 of which are named after the celebs who designed them:
  • Cece by Courteney Cox: Berry (Sheer)
  • Lindsay by Lindsay Lohan: Sweet California Pink (Sheer)
  • Mariska by Mariska Hargitay: Nude Caramel (Sheer)
  • Maria by Maria Menounos: Vibrant Poppy (Sheer)
  • Evangeline by Evangeline Lilly: Tropical Coral (Sheer)
  • Sarah by Sarah Chalke: Petal Pink (Shimmering Sheer)
Thus enabling you to have this conversation...
- "You have to check out my new lipstick... it was created by Sarah Chalke."
- "Who the fuck is Sarah Chalke?"
- "Remember when they got rid of Becky on Roseanne and then they got a new Becky? She's new Becky."
- "Ok..."
- "She's also on Scrubs."
- "I hate that show."
- "Me too."

The lipstick retails for $20, $2 of which goes directly to support St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
